Spirit Love
Down, down, I sank, till immersed in that mighty ocean where conflicting elements were swallowed by a mountain wave of darkness, which grasped me within its mighty folds and I sank to the lowest depths of forgetfulness.
âAndrew Jackson Davis
Joe Fisher was a bright and likeable young Canadian journalist with a winning smile that charmed the ladies. Nonetheless, like so many of us, the veteran writer struggled to find that enduring bond, the rapturous union of two souls. What he chanced uponâor thought he encounteredâwas so much more than that: an otherworldly passion that stretched across the ages. He could scarcely believe his good fortune, and, in the end, his luck would run out.
Born and educated in England, Fisher immigrated to Canada, where he forged a reputation as one of the countryâs leading investigative reporters. He also had a lifelong interest in metaphysical topics and wrote several books on past-life experiences. His 1985 The Case for Reincarnation boasted a preface by the Dalai Lama, an impressive tribute to Fisherâs stature as a writer.1
Fisher had long abandoned the Christian fundamentalism of his upbringing; his books were steeped in Eastern mysticism and taught that reincarnation is the prism through which all of reality is viewed. Though the concept of past lives is not found in the Bible, Fisher claimed that reincarnation was a primordial belief of early Christians and was suppressed by the institutionalized church. In his view, the Gnostics were the authentic Christians, while Rome and the fathers of the Church were guilty of censuring and eventually extinguishing the grand truth of the transmigration of souls. This line of argument was by no means original to Fisher; it is common to apologists of Eastern religions.
The Case for Reincarnation struck a chord, and Fisher was in demand on the media circuit. It was during an interview on a Toronto radio station that events were set in motion that would shake his Eastern worldview to the core. In his own words:
Little did I know that I had embarked on a voyage that would turn my perceptions inside out and bring me to the brink of emotional collapse. Ambling in where angels fear to tread, I was well and truly embroiled in mediumistic phenomena before the realization dawned that my rugged experience as an investigator was about as useful as a swimsuit on the moon.2
On the other end of the broadcast, a woman identified only as âAvivaââa pseudonym, as with the other characters in this unfolding tragedyâwas sitting by the radio in her apartment, listening intently. She wrote a letter that was forwarded to Fisher by his publisher. It was a cry for help, and unfolded a story almost too strange to believe.
